Chapter 8

Anna! Her daughter stood in front of her. She would recognize her anywhere. She was her mother after all. She had travelled over seven hundred miles to start a new life, and instead she found the missing piece of her heart. She didn’t know what to do, other than to cry.

“Excuse us a moment, Colt,” Charlie said as she put her arms around Grace.

“No!” Grace said, her voice shaking with emotion. “That’s my daughter. She’s been gone for almost three years. Please. Don’t take her away.”

Colt looked perplexed at what was unfolding in front of him. Hope continued to stand next to him like a statue while Grace cried and begged for her to stay. She could see the turmoil in his face. It was his duty as sheriff to calm the situation down. At the same time, it was his duty as Hope’s father to keep his daughter safe. And right now, she was acting like a raving lunatic.

Colt looked at his sister. “Erin, take Hope into the kitchen and find her a slice of apple pie.” Erin nodded and took Hope’s hand, leading her away quietly. “Charlie, might we continue this discussion in your office instead of the restaurant?”

Charlie didn’t question him or argue. She merely helped Grace stand, put her arm around her shoulders and led her out of the dining room and into the office. Grace cried into her hands, sobbing for Anna. Colt quickly stopped at the desk to quietly ask Mack to let Sam know he was needed at the hotel, before he joined the two ladies in the office.

As Colt entered the room, Grace stood. “She’s my daughter, sheriff. That lying, no-good, thieving husband of mine must have given her away. But she’s mine. And I want her back!”

Colt did his best to remain calm. He looked at Charlie for help. “Let’s sit down and talk this over, Miss Tupper. I need to hear the whole story of why you think Hope is your daughter.”

Charlie put her hand on Grace’s shoulder. “Sit down, Grace. Please. Colt hasn’t heard the story of your past yet. You need to help him understand, from the beginning.”

Grace sat on the couch, wringing her hands, as she once again told the story of Henry once again and his kidnapping of their daughter, Anna. She told him of her search, of the return of Henry’s body, and the missing status of Anna. Telling her story was draining, and she was afraid to look at Colt. Her past wasn’t something she was proud of.

Colt was silent for a moment after she finished. After processing all she had told him, he spoke. “I’m very sorry for your loss, Miss, no, Mrs. Tupper. Your husband sounds like the hind end of a donkey. But, what proof
